The guide to the play-offs on BT Vision

By Christopher Gibbons

BT Vision is showing every play-off semi-final and final from the Championship, League One and League Two. Here's our guide to what happened..

THE CHAMPIONSHIP

Bristol City booked their place at Wembley with an exhilarating win at Ashton Gate in the second leg of their Championship play-off semi-final against Crystal Palace. Leading 2-1 on aggregate from the first leg, City almost blew it when, 1-0 down with 20 minutes to go, they conceded a penalty. But Palace's Ben Watson - who'd scored his side's opener - hit the post. The game went to extra time where Lee Trundle put City in the driving seat with a sublime strike, before a Michael McIndoe free kick made it 2-1.

Watford's wretched run of form continued into the play-offs and Hull took full advantage. The Tigers won the first leg 2-0 at Vicarage Road, leaving Aidy Boothroyd's team with a mountain to climb in the second leg. Darius Henderson began to scale it in the second leg when he put Watford 1-0 up after 12 minutes, but Hull hit back - hard. Goals from Nicky Barmby, Caleb Folan, Richard Garcia and Nathan Doyle gave them a 4-1 victory.

In the final it was 39-year-old Dean Windass who emerged the hero for Hull City, volleying in spectacularly from 18 yards to give the northerners a 1-0 victory. It means that Hull will spend next season in the Premier League, the first time the club has appeared in the top flight in its entire history.

LEAGUE ONE

With the first leg between Southend and Doncaster ending in a 0-0 stalemate, fans were probably expecting another tight affair at the Keepmoat Stadium. Well, it didn't quite work out like that as Rovers destroyed their League One rivals 5-1, booking their place at Wembley in some style. James Coppinger was the man of the match with two excellent goals following mazy runs through the Southend defence plus a free kick late on. It was particularly pleasing for boss Sean O'Driscoll who felt they had been promising a performance like this all season.

Carlisle were the shock winners of the first leg of their play-off semi-final with Leeds, emerging 2-1 winners at Elland Road. But Dougie Freedman's last-minute goal for the Yorkshire side proved invaluable, for in the second leg it was Leeds who were on the front foot, going ahead 1-0 thanks to midfielder Jonathan Howson. It was the same player who was the hero at the death, slotting home to give Leeds an aggregate 3-2 victory and a place in the Wembley final.

In the final itself it was Doncaster who emerged victorious, after outplaying their more illustrious Yorkshire rivals. James Hayter - with his first goal since January - put Doncaster ahead in the 47th minute and Leeds could find no reply. It continues Doncaster's remarkable rise up the divisions, having been promoted from the Conference in 2003.

LEAGUE TWO

Despite losing an early goal and falling 3-1 behind on aggregate, Rochdale managed to lift themselves and grab two goals through Chris Dagnall and David Perkins to win the second leg and take the game into extra-time and penalties. Unfortunately for the Quakers, Jason Kennedy saw his spot-kick saved by Tommy Lee (a repeat of a penalty miss in normal time), before Rochdale's Ben Muirhead sealed it 5-4 on penalties.

The other semi-final saw Stockport squeeze past Wycombe 1-0 in the second leg at Edgeley Park, with a 2-1 aggregate score. County grabbed an early lead when Liam Dickenson broke through from the half-way line to calmly slot home, but Wanderers will be disappointed with the number of good chances that they wasted.

In the Wembley final it was Stockport who booked their passage to League One, impressing with their superior passing and movement. Rochdale did take the lead, but a Nathan Stanton own goal, along with strikes from Anthony Pilkington and Liam Dickinson put the Hatters in the driving seat. Rochdale clawed one back to provide a nail-biting finish, but could do no more to prevent them returning to the fourth tier for the 35th consecutive season.
